True StoryWhere does the name Moby come from?

If you thought Moby was just a stagename, or even his real name, you were wrong (just like we were, don't worry). Moby means more than that!

Singer Moby was born as Richard Melville Hall in 1965. The story goes that his parents felt that his given name didn’t suit the person Richard was when he was a kid. They gave him a nickname, which was ‘Moby’.

The name Moby probably makes you think of another great Moby in history: Moby Dick. It is not a coincidence that the two names are the same, because the author of Moby Dick, Herman Melville (see the middle name of Moby/Richard?), is Moby’s great-great-great uncle.

Fun fact: Moby tried to read ‘Moby Dick ’several times, but he never got quite through it. :-)
