One June 1, Kanye West released his albumYe. It is the rapper’s eight consecutive Number One album. In the first week of its release, it already sold 205.000 copies. A big part of this total amount was thanks to 120.000 streaming equivalent albums, which includes streaming and downloads. 85.000 were traditional sales on CD.

Having eight straight Number One albums, Kanye West now joins fellow rapper Eminem as the only artist who was ever able to reach this goal. West has been working up to this objective since 2005, when his second album Late Registration was released. It continued with Graduation, 808s & Heartbreak, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Watch the Throne with Jay-Z, Yeezus, The Life of Pablo and now Ye as well. Only his first LP, The College Dropout, wasn’t able to hit number one: it peaked at number two in 2004. West can now even make it to nine straight number one albums, since he has been collaborating with Kid Cudi on a new album named Kids See Ghosts. If he succeeds, he will be the only artist being able to reach that objective. This depends on how the Billboard 200 views the record.

Having heard many negative stories about West before, it now seems he is heading in the right direction. He stated that he would be releasing five albums in just five weeks, either producing or rapping. In May, he functioned as the producer of Pusha-T’s new album, so that’s one. Then in June he released his own album, and he also collaborated with Kid Cudi on an album. That’s two and three. Now, we just have to wait for his producing skills on albums of Teyana Taylor, as well as rapper NAS. Let’s see if he makes it into the news with only music this time!
