She is one of the most popular women in hip-hop as we speak. We’re talking about 25-year old Belcalis Almanzar, better known as Cardi B. Recently, she has been a guest at a variety of shows, such as The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and The Ellen Degeneres Show, so if you still haven’t heard of her: here’s an introduction to the wild story of Cardi B.
I. An interesting job
Before becoming a successful artist, Cardi B was a stripper for 3.5 years. In an interview with Ellen Degeneres, she mentions that it made her good money, it allowed her to pay the bills, and it got her an apartment (and even a boob job). The transition from stripper to rapper came about when she was finally able to invest all the money she had earned into her dreams. She wrote this song about her experiences during the job, and the men that came with it.
II. It WAS her
In November 2015, Cardi B made her musical debut when she did a collaboration with Shaggy, and can be heard on the remix to the single “Boom Boom”. Cardi B’s first music video debut was with the song called “Cheap Ass Weave”, which can be seen up here.
III. 1 & Vol. 2
In 2016 & 2017, Cardi B released two mixtapes of her own called Gangsta Bitch Music Vol. 1 & Vol. 2. Vol. 1 was her debut mixtape, and even got her into trouble: she was sued by a model. According to his story, she has used the image on the mixtape without his permission, even though the model can’t even be seen on the mixtape. According to him, it’s his tattoo that was used for the cover.
IV. Rise to fame
In February 2017, Cardi B signed a major record deal with Atlantic Records, and in August, her first commercial debut single “Bodak Yellow” was released. It was an instant success and it became a viral hit. She even climbed to the top of the charts with the US Billboard Hot 100. It was also the year that she was nominated at the 2017 BET Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, and she also received two Grammy nominations.
V. Bun in the oven
Her debut studio album “Invasion of Privacy” was released on April 6 2018. Not much later, she revealed her pregnancy during a performance at Saturday Night Live. While performing, the camera zooms out and shows the first glimpse of her baby bump. She is expecting her very first child with rapper Offset, so she announced that she needs to take a break from performing because of her being in the last stages of her pregnancy. If we won’t be able to see her live, we will just have to keep listening to her new album!
