In ancient Verona, Italy, we find the perfectly preserved historic site of a Roman amphitheatre. The Verona Arena is of course immensely popular for fabulous opera showings, but offers playground for modern music too.
The magnificent arena dates back to the first century, when it could house up to 30,000 people. Even then spectators would come from far to see the impressive works of the theatre. The building survived a heavy earthquake in 1117, but the outer ring that was originally built of white and pink limestone had to be replaced.
The theatre today
Nowadays, the theatre will only allow a crowd of 15,000 people. It is still the host of plenty opera performances, as well as its very own opera festival. In terms of modern music, the arena has seen many different artists: from Paul McCartney to Björk to Muse.This year’s schedule shows artists such as Bob Dylan, Sam Smith, Jack Savoretti, Lenny Kravitz, and Sting.
